Even before the Great Recession hit a decade ago, Gateway Paint and Chemical Co. knew it had to shift its primary market from house and wall paints to coatings it whipped up for specialty customers.
Among the first products made as part of its diversification strategy? Coatings developed for the cattle industry — a non-toxic paint used as an identification mark on animals that will not wash away in rain.
“Without that kind of product evolution, we wouldn’t be here,” said Harold Blumenfeld whose father and uncle founded the Strip District business 65 years ago.
